With The Predator due to hit theatres around the world on September 14th we’ve been eagerly awaiting the final trailer to see if there are any hints that the franchise could return to the lofty heights of the original.

Since Adrien Brody starred in the 2010 film Predators which was a commercial and critical flop the series has laid dormant until now. The Predator wrote and directed by Shane Black (Predator and Iron Man 3) is the big relaunch but does it look like the golden goose Fox is hoping for?

From the trailer, we see gore, violence, dark humor and something for the fans — the lore from novels and Comics. That’s right predator dogs and they look amazing. We also see something touched on in the 2010 movie which is there are different types of predator. We get a glimpse of a jumbo-sized super predator rocking around the military base tearing shit up.

Trying to gain plot points from the trailer though is more of a mission. From what I gathered a ship crashed there’s been an encounter and a team of slightly insane special forces operatives is on deck. Some of whom seem to know exactly why they’re there, while others (let’s assume predator fodder) are clueless. We also see a predator autopsy about to start, emphasis on the word about as it appears to end with a predator win.

We hear once again a description of what the Predator is and hear it given its name officially by a rather stylish science guy played by Sterling K. Brown. The trailer is sleek and stylish which was to be expected and we also see Jake Busey who has an obvious connection to the franchise since his old man got sliced in half in an abattoir in Predator 2 (Infinity easter egg expected).

All in all the trailer looks super cool and fun but in a similar vein of the AVP movies which for many will be a huge concern. Shane Black being involved is also to a concern for many as whilst the original Predator was a great sci-fi suspense horror Shane’s more recent history is shady (fake Mandarin anyone) which is troubling.

The major fault of the trailer though for me was the sense it was a music video with The Predator spliced in for effect. On September 14th though I hope this movie reinvigorates not just the franchise but a genre searching for a new flagship after the last couple of Alien movies.
